April
27, 1933 I cleaned out the chicken and
hen houses. Jacob and Corney cut up
small branches. John went to
school. Mama and Mary mended.
Cleaning the manure out of the chicken and hen houses was
a nasty job, but it had to be done. The
manure had to be shoveled out periodically or it would pile up deep. Of course, it made great fertilizer for the
garden. The hen house was where the
chickens roosted at night. Only the
brooding hens were put in the chicken house to sit on their nests of eggs in dark
and quiet solitude.
